The Irishman

The Irishman
One of the most-talked about movies of the year, “The Irishman” likely will be remembered as one of the major accomplishments of Martin Scorsese’s already titanic career. The 3-½ hour epic flashes back through the life and (dirty) deeds of the title character, also known as Frank Sheeran, a truck driver who became an assassin for the mob in the 1950s when he gets involved with Russell Bufalino and his Pennsylvania crime family. As Sheeran climbs the ranks to become a top hit man, he also goes to work for Jimmy Hoffa -- a powerful Teamster tied to organized crime.

Sheeran’s 2004 memoir “I Heard You Paint Houses” provides the template for the screenplay by Steven Zaillian (“Schindler’s List,” “Gangs of New York”). The heavyweight cast brings back together Scorsese favorites Robert DeNiro (as The Irishman), Harvey Keitel and Joe Pesci, along with Al Pacino, Bobby Cannavale, Anna Paquin and Ray Romano. The film already has sparked a lot of conversation. Several theater chains have refused to show it, in a conflict with its distributor, Netflix, which has put the film into limited release pending its imminent launch on the streaming service. (Hence, a rare chance for Floridians to see the movie on the big screen).

There also is Scorsese’s use of “de-aging” effects to alter the faces of Pacino, DeNiro and Pesci as they portrayed younger versions of their characters, which has stirred some debate. Nonetheless, “The Irishman” has been acclaimed as “a coldly enthralling, longform knockout – a majestic Mob epic with ice in its veins.” (Variety).
