Senior year of high school in the economically depressed South Florida town of Pahokee poses all kinds of challenges for the four teenagers whose lives are sympathetically tracked in this heartfelt verite documentary, one in which the familiar campus rituals of an American adolescence – football games, beauty pageants, academic recognition – also reflect on the dreams and ambitions of the mostly African-American subjects. This sort of film is a documentary genre of its own, but co-directors Lucas and Bresnan distinguish their take with revealing detail and the collaborative participation of the kids themselves, very much a part of the filmmaking process.
