Midnight Traveler

November 5 @ 12:00 am

Midnight Traveler

Countless refugees are in flight around the world, often seen as statistics or political talking points rather than as human beings, even when sympathetic documentarians are involved. But what happens when a filmmaker and his family have to escape their home under threat of death? That’s the gripping story told in this remarkable, shot by Afghani director Fazili and his wife Fatima Hussaini (also a filmmaker) and their two young daughters using only their cell phones. The family captures its uncertain and often hazardous trek across multiple countries and situations, toward hoped-for European asylum. The film, which couldn’t exist without mobile technology, is laced with generous humor and poetic interludes of pure visual expression, even as it details the rigors and occasional terrors of the family’s plight.
