Just Mercy

Michael B. Jordan is one of the biggest new stars of the decade, each new film since his 2013 breakout in “Fruitvale Station” taking him higher into Hollywood’s stratosphere. Following his roles as Adonis Creed in “Creed” and Erik Killmonger in “Black Panther,” he leaves the world of big-screen action behind for this intense legal drama. The story is based on the real-life memoirs of bravura social justice lawyer Bryan Stevenson, who founded Alabama’s Equal Justice Initiative.

The film zeroes in on a transformational case fought early in Stevenson’s career, that of Walter McMillan (Jamie Foxx), sentenced to death for the long-unsolved murder of a white girl, with no evidence and a well-supported alibi. In the process, the lawyer takes on not just the legal system but the entrenched racism of the deep South, with all its scare tactics and intimidation – not unlike Sidney Poitier’s Virgil Tibbs in “In the Heat of the Night.”

It’s the fourth film from “Short Term 12” director Cretton, whose casting gives two great actors a great occasion to play off each other. “Jordan serves as straight man for the beaten-down magnetism of Foxx, whose character understands things about the world the younger man can't fathom,” said The Hollywood Reporter. “A couple of Foxx's scenes are transfixing enough to make you hold your breath without realizing it."
