November 5 @ 12:00 am

French actor-writer-director Mati Diop became the first black woman to land a film in competition at the Cannes Film Festival with this romantic drama, now the Senegalese entry for the Academy Awards best foreign film. The story pivots around an illicit love affair between a young woman, soon to be married to a wealthy suitor, and a laborer, whose sudden departure from Dakar on a risky boat voyage to Spain sets up a lyrical and suspenseful story of supernatural revenge.
