40th Anniverary of Alien w/ Tom Skerritt

In a 57-year screen career that is still going strong, actor Tom Skerritt has appeared everywhere, from vintage sitcoms (“My Favorite Martian”) to cult classics (“Harold and Maude”) to epocahl blockbusters (“Top Gun”), often bringing a seasoned, authoritative perspective to his performances that spoke to his time in the United States Air Force – an experience that sometimes overlapped with his movie roles. Count “Alien” among them.

The groundbreaking horror film, which came out at the end of a decade marked by groundbreaking horror films, was released 40 years ago. It arrived in America’s budding multiplexes the same spring as “Manhattan,” “Rocky II” and “The Muppet Movie,” and jump-scared the living bejesus out of audiences with its saga of an outer space rescue mission gone horribly wrong.

Directed by Ridley Scott from Dan O’Bannon’s now-famous screenplay, the film bolstered the stardom of its lead, Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, and introduced one of cinema’s all-time-greatest creatures: German artist H.R. Giger’s Xenomorph, in all its gnarly, acid-spraying, chest-bursting variations. Come spill your popcorn all over again, and hear Skerritt’s anecdotes and revelations about the production in a Q&A to accompany the screening.
