20th Anniversary of Boys Don’t Cry w/ Kimberly Peirce

Hilary Swank won her first Oscar for best actress for her performance in this emotionally wrenching heartland drama: a fictional adaptation of the true-life story of Brandon Teena, a trans man whose 1993 murder in Humboldt, Nebraska, was a flashpoint for transgender rights and awareness. Writer-director Kimberly Peirce will talk about her experiences making the film, which has its roots in a short film she made while still a graduate student at Columbia University. She made trips to Nebraska to do interviews and attend the trials of the two men convicted of killing Teena.

The full-length drama mixes fictional and nonfictional elements (drawing material from the documentary “The Brandon Teena Story”). “Peirce and Andy Bienen’s multilayered script is inspired by the literary journalism of Truman Capote (“In Cold Blood”) and Norman Mailer (“The Executioner’s Song”), and by such uniquely American crimers as “Bonnie and Clyde” and “Badlands,” rural sagas that viewed their subjects from a chillingly detached perspective.” wrote Variety’s critic in the 1999 review of the film, which co-starred Chloe Sevigny (an Academy Award nominee for supporting actress) as Teena’s girlfriend, Lana Tisdel, who also was murdered, and Peter Sarsgaard as one of the killers.
